RBA lifts cash rate to 4.60% as Spanish inflation hits 5%
  • The RBA's Monetary Policy Board voted unanimously to raise the cash rate target 25 basis points to 4.60%, matching market expectations and marking the fourth increase of 2026.
  • The RBA cited a broadening Middle East conflict pushing global energy prices well above August forecast assumptions, AI-related demand driving rapid growth in global technology-goods prices, and persistent domestic capacity pressure as reasons the upside inflation risks flagged in August are materialising.
  • Spanish consumer prices rose 5% year-on-year in September, up from 4.6% in August, the highest since February 2023 and above the 4.9% median analyst estimate, keeping inflation far beyond the ECB's 2% target.
  • The RBA said three prior hikes this year have tightened financial conditions and the economy appears to be slowing, but inflation is still too high, warranting further tightening to return price growth to target in a reasonable period.
