Cognex buys RealSense for $500M to enter robotic perception
  • Cognex will pay approximately $500 million in cash for RealSense, funded entirely from cash on hand; the company reported $755 million in cash and investments at the end of Q2.
  • The acquisition moves Cognex beyond industrial ID and 2D/3D measurement into 3D depth perception and robotic navigation, adding fixed-arm guidance, autonomous mobile robots, quadrupeds and humanoids to its served market.
  • Cognex sizes the robotic perception market at about $600 million today, growing more than 25% annually to roughly $1.6 billion by 2030.
  • RealSense is expected to generate $80 million-$90 million of revenue in 2026, growth above 50% year over year, on a platform that has shipped more than 1 million units with over 70 patents and about 20,000 active developers.
  • Cognex expects the deal to close in Q4 2026 and says it will not materially affect 2026 results; it will fund a three-year cash retention program of about $56.5 million at target plus roughly $50 million in restricted stock units for RealSense employees.
  • Before closing, RealSense will spin out its Facial Authentication product line into an independent company focused on the biometrics market; Evercore advised Cognex on the transaction.
